tekken

Steve Fox (スティーブ・フォックス Stību Fokkusu?) is a character in the Tekken series, first appearing in Tekken 4, he has returned for all subsequent games. Steve is a young British boxer who was adopted at a young age and whose origins long remained shrouded in mystery. Throughout the games, Steve's main objective has been to learn more information about his past, including the origin of the mysterious scar on his arm, and to get revenge against those responsible.

With his debut in Tekken 4, it was revealed that he is the biological son of Nina Williams and an unnamed legendary boxer that his conception was carried out synthetically by the Mishima Zaibatsu. Then later in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 and Tekken 7, it was revealed that the Zaibatsu ordered his conception in order to get themselves a new, more durable, test subject for their experiments.[6]

Biography

Steve Fox is a boxer who was created by the Mishima Zaibatsu. After reclaiming the Mishima Zaibatsu from his son and witnessing the power of the Devil firsthand in the second King of Iron Fist Tournament, CEO Heihachi Mishima began his own research into the terrifying power of the Devil Gene. In an attempt to replicate this superhuman strength, the Mishima Zaibatsu started a genetic modification plan with the goal of replicating the effects of the gene on regular humans through the creation of a synthetic Devil Gene. Heihachi used eggs from the assassin Nina Williams, who was cryogenically frozen by Doctor Bosconovitch at the Zaibatsu at the time, to create babies that he used to conduct these experiments. Most of the children died as a result of the experiments and the supersoldier program was ultimately considered a failure.[9]

One of the children in the program was known as Subject NT01, or Steve. A doctor supervising the experimentation on Steve, Emma Kliesen, developed a bond with the boy, much to the disparagement of her more clinically minded colleagues.[10] It was also Emma who helped Steve escape the laboratories at the age of six by faking his death in an experiment.[2] At some point following this, it is likely that Steve was adopted and subsequently raised in the United Kingdom. It is unknown to what extent the childhood experiments affected Steve's physical capabilities. Regardless, by the age of 21, Steve Fox was a middleweight boxing champion. Steve remembered very little about his early childhood, and his driving motivations prior to his King of Iron Fist Tournament debut were to find out who his birth parents were and to discover how he got the large scar on his left arm.

Steve entered the King of Iron Fist Tournament 4 after becoming embroiled in trouble with The Syndicate. Despite the danger, Steve believed the tournament would bolster his chances of connecting with his birth parents.[11] At the tournament, he met Lei Wulong, who was able to help Steve discover that he was created by the Mishima Zaibatsu.[12]

Steve entered the King of Iron Fist Tournament 5 to 'settle the score' with the Mishima Zaibatsu, and succeeded in destroying the Mishima Zaibatsu's research institute.

When the world was plunged into war by the Mishima Zaibatsu under Jin Kazama’s leadership, many major boxing meets were cancelled, leaving Steve without a livelihood. Around this time, Paul Phoenix and Marshall Law invited Steve to train with them, and he became training buddies with the two.[13]

Steve continued to search for information about his past.[9] He eventually met Nina Williams by chance and learned that he had been created using her genetic material. Nina was completely disinterested in Steve. Now that his search for his past was over, Steve became listless.[1] He entered the King of Iron Fist Tournament 8 regardless, winning the Europe A Block preliminaries and progressing to the next round of the tournament in Italy.[14] The tournament came to an abrupt end when Kazuya Mishima clashed with Yggdrasil and United Nations forces.[15] Steve aligned himself with Yggdrasil and fought against G Corporation alongside their forces in Yakushima.[16]

Personality

Steve is a measured individual who values fair professional fighting, as evidenced by his refusal to throw a fight despite threats from a corrupt group,[11] and his response to Marduk's poor and unsportsmanlike conduct during a match.[17] He is personable and has made several allies through the series, including Lei Wulong, Marshall Law, and Paul Phoenix. Steve is troubled by his mysterious past, and a raw, angry side of him can emerge when he is confronted with the Mishima Zaibatsu's human experimentation.[18]

Steve is quick to try to protect people who are important to him, even hostile parties; he prevents Lei from arresting Nina Williams, his biological mother, in his Tekken 4 ending despite her aiming a gun at him moments before,[19] and then draws Tekken Force fire away from her in Tekken 7 even though she has just told him she wants nothing to do with him.[9]

Steve can be somewhat cocky and belligerent at times, like in Bruce Irvin's Tekken 5 interludes, where Steve calls Bruce 'pops' and tells him to go home since he has 'no time for old-timers'.[20] Additionally, Steve has a win pose where he postures as if addressing someone off-screen and says, "Hey you. You wanna try me, guv?" He also has a win pose in Tekken 4 where he disparagingly says "What a joke!" about his defeated opponent.

Appearance

Steve has blonde hair and blue eyes. His hair is shoulder-length and feathered, and is usually worn slicked back. Steve's entire left arm is covered in a large scar due to the experiments conducted on him in his childhood.

Rival Fight
Steve and Hwoarang come across Poison and Hugo, who are arguing about what to eat. Steve attempts to break up the fight by holding Poison back, and calls on Hwoarang to help him. Hwoarang initially refuses to get involved, but reluctantly joins in and deals with Hugo when Steve threatens to tell Baek about his inaction. Poison angrily calls Steve's attention away from Hwoarang, and he realizes his hands are on her chest. Mortified, Steve backs off as Poison's fury intensifies. Hugo shoves Hwoarang away and reconciles with Poison, preparing to fight Hwoarang and Steve alongside her.[31]

Ending Description

Steve asks Hwoarang if he'd be able to handle a new opponent on his own, and Hwoarang responds by saying he could take on a hundred opponents 'without breaking a sweat'. Pandora grants Hwoarang what it understands to be his wish, and Steve and Hwoarang turn to see a hundred Akumas gathered, ready to fight. Steve and Hwoarang look on in horror, and the screen fills with a graphical depiction of Akuma's Raging Demon attack.[32]

Special Alliance Partners:

Tekken Revolution

Steve Fox appears in Tekken Revolution as an unlockable character.

Tekken: Bloodline

Steve makes a brief appearance as one of the entrants for the third King of Iron Fist Tournament though he is defeated off-screen in his first match against Hwoarang.

Character Relationships

Gameplay

With a unique fighting style based on bobs, sways and punches, and almost no kicks, Steve is one of the most unorthodox characters in the series. He has incredibly fast and effective punches and combos, very strong low attacks, and can lay the pressure on his opponent like few others in the roster. Perhaps one of the most dangerous fighters in the roster, Steve can turn around a fight with his hard-hitting blows and high-low combos in a flash, and his counter-hits are among the most effective around. Also, Steve's dodging capabilities are unrivaled by any other character in the series if timed properly. Blind reliance on this tactic is very risky, though, and going the wrong way might end up being a game-changing mistake. Placing too much confidence in Steve's evasive maneuvers renders him open to various kinds of damages, the worst-case scenario being KO'd by a set of elaborate combos. Unique to him and befitting his fighting style, his 3 and 4 inputs have him performing bobs and weaves instead of kicks. Because he makes minimal use of 3 and 4 inputs and mostly relies on 1 and 2 inputs, regular throws can be somewhat ineffective against him, as a Steve player can easily break throws by accident.

Fighting Style

Steve uses Boxing as his fighting style. He is proficient with multiple boxing stances like flicker and peekaboo stances. Due to being unrestrained by boxing rules and to adapt fighting against non-boxers, he uses moves that are normally illegal in boxing like grappling, shoulder push, elbows, punches to the lower body, jumping punches, and feet stomps.
